Last year, the state legislature passed a law requiring children 7 and younger to undergo a vision screening before entering public school.
According to Joannah Vaughan, director of the preschool vision screening program at Elks Children’s Eye Clinic, this is critical. Approximately 15 percent of children have vision problems that can be corrected through early detection.
"What we recognize is our population between 2010 and 2013 has only increased 1 percent," said Cindy Morgan with Lane County Public Health, "and yet the number of cases - the rate - has increased about 800 percent."
