The Douglas County Sheriff's Office evacuated homes Thursday afternoon as the Stouts Fire filled the sky with smoke.

"They said, you guys got to get out of here and so we grabbed the kids and what pets we had and got out of there," said Ross Coleman. "It's just hard losing 50 year worth of stuff, but that's the way it goes."

The American Red Cross established a shelter at Canyonville Elementary School.

More homes have been told to prepare to evacuate as firefighters mobilize to combat the 6,000-acre Stouts Fire east of Canyonville.

The Benton County Fair opened Wednesday, the first of what is expected to be a string of days with high temperatures over 100 F.

The heat will present health risks for people and pets and fire risks for forests and grasslands this week. An excessive heat warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Friday for much of the Willamette Valley.

One of the most crucial reminders is staying hydrated.
