Police responded to the Fillmore Pump Station, which handles wastewater flows from south and west Eugene. A public works crew discovered what is believed to be a human body in an underground "wet well."

A human body was recovered from the bottom of a "wet well" at a sewage pumping station.

"We don't have any more information until we retrieve the body and start a process to find out what happened here," Melinda McLaughlin, Eugene Police spokesperson, said Wednesday evening.

The body had been recovered by Thursday morning after crews pumped the wastewater out of a deep underground shaft.

McLaughlin said Thursday that the identity of the deceased is not yet known. The medical examiner has yet to identify the person's gender or cause of death.
